Shopify is a strong SEO platform out of the box, but the defaults leave a lot of rankings on the table. Most stores have duplicate-content issues, thin product pages and slow themes that quietly cap their organic sales. Work through this checklist to fix the fundamentals and build an organic channel that compounds.
1. Technical foundation
- Set one canonical domain (www or non-www) and force HTTPS.
- Fix the duplicate-content traps Shopify creates with product URLs inside collections - use canonical tags correctly.
- Submit your sitemap.xml in Google Search Console and check coverage.
- Clean up thin tag pages that can bloat the index - noindex what has no search value.
- Add Organization and Product schema for rich results.
2. Keyword and structure
- Map keywords to collection and product pages - collections target category terms, products target specific-product terms.
- Use a logical structure: Home > Collection > Product, with clean, descriptive URLs.
- Target buyer intent ("buy", "best", "[product] for [use]"), not just generic head terms.
3. Product and collection pages
- Write unique product descriptions - never paste the manufacturer's copy (duplicate content).
- Optimize titles and meta descriptions for each product and collection.
- Add intro content to collection pages so they are not just a grid of products.
- Use descriptive image alt text and compress every image.
- Add reviews and FAQ schema to product pages for trust and rich snippets.
4. Speed and Core Web Vitals
- Choose a fast, lightweight theme and remove unused apps - each app adds scripts that slow you down.
- Compress and lazy-load images.
- Pass Core Web Vitals on mobile - most ecommerce traffic and a big chunk of rankings ride on it.
5. Content and links
- Start a blog targeting buyer questions and "best [product]" searches that feed your collections.
- Internally link blog content to the relevant collections and products.
- Earn backlinks via PR, partnerships, supplier listings and creator collaborations.
