AI search (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's own AI Overviews) answers a question directly with a synthesised response and a few cited sources, while traditional Google search returns a list of links to choose from. AI search is faster for the user but sends fewer clicks - so being one of the cited sources matters more than ranking tenth on a page. Both will coexist for years; the smart move is to stay visible in both.
The core difference
Traditional search hands you ten options and lets you pick. AI search does the picking for you - it reads many pages, writes one answer, and names a handful of sources. That changes the game from "be one of ten links" to "be one of three cited authorities." The underlying web index is largely shared, which is why strong SEO still feeds AI visibility.
AI search vs Google: side by side
| Traditional Google | AI search | |
|---|---|---|
| Result format | List of links | One synthesised answer + citations |
| User effort | Click and compare pages | Read one answer |
| Best for | Browsing, choice, deep research | Quick answers, summaries, recommendations |
| Clicks to sites | Higher | Lower, but higher-intent when they happen |
| How you win | Rank in the top results | Be a trusted, quotable cited source |
| Trust signal | Position on the page | Being named in the answer |
What it means for your traffic
Expect fewer clicks on simple informational queries (the answer is given inline) but higher-quality visits when someone does click through from an AI citation - they arrive pre-informed and closer to buying. The businesses hurt most are those relying on thin informational traffic; the ones that gain are those cited for commercial and comparison questions. The traffic data behind this is in Perplexity vs Google AI Overviews traffic and AI search statistics 2026.

How to stay visible in both
You do not have to choose. The same foundation wins in both worlds: rank well with solid SEO, then layer on answer-first content, schema and entity clarity so AI engines cite you. The full plan is in how to appear in AI search, and whether this replaces SEO is answered in will AI replace SEO. To get it implemented, see our AEO service or book a free strategy audit.
